El Vaquero - Flash Art Review

In his most recent work, Visceral Realist-affiliated artist El Vaquero infuriated museum administrators when they became unwitting accomplices to his infamous abduction and display of a local curator during the artist's 2000 exhibition at the Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona. In a public relations coup, El Vaquero managed to convince a Flash Art critic to write a review.

Buried deep in SPRV archives, our staff discovered a tape of an interview that we believe was a conversation between leading Visceral Realist Gustavo Raynal and iconic art critic Clement Greenberg. Although we cannot reconcile some inconsistencies in the dates, we believe the tapes to be genuine. A full transcription of the interview is made available here online and provide an interesting and surprising exposition of some of the origins of visceral realist thinking.

Accompanying the show will be an edited version of the original catalogue of their cancelled 2002 Fundacion Telefonicas retrospective, reprinted with original cover design.

The Visceral Realists published only six issues of the JOIV, but the publication eventually became highly influential in Buenos Aires' artist and political science circles, establishing cogent arguments for confrontational artistic intervention as a legitimate strategy for political change and resistance. In collaboration with Movement Detritus Press, SPVR Publications has reprinted the 4th Edition of this seminal publication.
